Hares About Town is a spectacular public art event in partnership with Wild in Art that will weave its way across Southend on Sea, the seafront, High Street through to Priory Park – The town will be filled with giant Hare sculptures!

July 1st until 12th September 2021 – 10 whole weeks!

These beautiful Hare sculptures, each one individually designed by an artist and sponsored by a business, form a free, fun, family-friendly trail of discovery for local people to explore and enjoy!

In addition to the big hare sculptures we have over 50 Leverets (baby hares) that have been designed and created by over 40 schools and community groups across the Borough. These Leverets will form their own trail in Southends’ cultural hotspots slightly earlier than the above trail – from the 14th June. more information

Following the trail, the Hares will be whisked off for a little makeover, before coming together again, along with the leverets to form a wonderful exhibition at our Farewell Event more information

After entertaining the public and bringing people together, the legacy of Hares About Town continues as many of the sculptures will be auctioned to raise vital funds for a local charity Havens Hospices.

Be part of this unique event that will raise money for a much-loved local charity and deliver significant economic, social and cultural benefits to the town. Sponsor information

Call For Artists

Transform a three-dimensional blank canvas – the Hare sculpture – with your artwork. Join the art trail and have your work seen by hundreds of thousands of people. We are actively encouraging submissions from the local and regional arts community. Designs are welcomed in any medium; from traditional to new media, fine art to illustrations, graffiti and mosaic. Whatever the art form, we’re keen to add drama, fun and a creative flourish to Hares About Town!

“I love Wild in Art events because my artwork will be seen by so many people. I’m all about taking art out of the gallery, making it accessible to everyone & putting it on the street.”
Jenny Leonard, Artist

Take part in our Learning Programme
and lessons and hop to the next level!

Schools, colleges and community groups from across Southend are invited to join in the fun. Adopt and design your own smaller Hare sculpture – a Leveret – while taking part in our county-wide Learning Programme for children and young people.

The sculptures give an exceptional, creative opportunity to engage pupils in important topics – from environmental issues and the natural world, to citizenship, and health and wellbeing, to name a few.

Get creative in the classroom and see your 3d masterpiece on the art trail in the town’s cultural hubs. After 10 weeks on public display, it’s yours to keep in its forever warren in your school, college or community.
